Budget and Staffing UpdatesThis year our school enrollment was projected at 257. As of right now, we currently have 287 students enrolled at our school. This change has meant that we have had to make some decisions about how to best staff our school to meet the needs of our learners. We advised you last week that we have are currently hiring several new staff, including a part time teacher whose focus will be on Physical Education and English Language Learning. We have now posted a position for an English Language Learning Assistant to help her with this important work. We have also posted for an additional Education Assistant to work with our students. As with all of our decisions we make, these have been made with what is in the best interest of students at the forefront. When we have filled all of these positions, we will send home a current staff list. School Development Planning We are currently developing our school development plan for 2016-2017. Over the past four years we have focused on literacy and inquiry and students have made gains in both areas. We have reviewed data from several sources to conclude that the area we need to direct our attention should shift to Mathematics. During this year as we intentionally focus on this area within our school, we will share our work at School Council meetings, as well as in this blog. Please click on Mathematics on the side bar to see all blogs that have been posted previously about mathematics and how you can help your children at home. One of the questions we are asked most often is why mathematical instruction is changing from the way we were taught. This youtube video provides a good introduction into this conversation. School Updates
School Council, staff, and students themselves at our most recent Student Advisory Meeting, all noted that we have not been caring for our place very well recently. Student Advisory has decided to challenge all students to keep the school clean and cared for both indoors and out for at LEAST two weeks. They proposed that if students and staff can do that, we will celebrate with a movie for the whole school in the gym. Mrs. Wickland thought that sounded like a great idea and since they posed the challenge, everyone has sure been helping out! If successful, students will enjoy a movie together in early November!
