Research shows that children who regularly have conversations with adults not only increase their vocabulary, but that vocabulary is an indicator of future reading and academic success. As a parent I know that sometimes when you ask your child, "How was your day?" you can receive a grunt or "fine" as a response and that can be the end of the conversation. Part of the reason that we have decided to use Twitter to communicate with parents is that in sharing what is happening through the day, as well as frequently including images can be a starting point to those conversations. Some children can be overwhelmed by those large general questions, and often asking specifically about a specific time or event can help the child focus their attention to one aspect of their day. Having frequent conversations, as well as storytelling with your child can dramatically increase their vocabulary. Are the conversations you have with your children similar to those you have with adults? Do you share how your day went, what books you are reading and ongoing events within and beyond your home? These are links to two great websites about how to talk to your children - and how to encourage them to respond (which is often the more challenging part). Updates from the Office
