Bicycle SafetyOur staff have been watching with concern as many of our students arrive at school riding bikes, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades without having any protective gear. Since this is a significant safety concern, this week we held a Safety Assembly about both riding and walking to school. Safety was discussed by Constable Hoard, our Calgary Police Officer, our school safety patrols, Mr. Perron and Mrs. Smid from Douglas Harkness School Council. Did you know that even a small impact can result in permanent brain damage? Constable Hoard reminded students that as bike riders, they are considered to be driving vehicles and must follow the same rules as cars. He focused on the importance of wearing a helmet to be safe. Did you know that in the province of Alberta it is the law that all children below the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle?
Constable Hoard shared a video with lots of great information about bike safety. You can stream through YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBGW8j__Jsg. This image is also linked to Youtube. It is critical that all riders ride on the right side of the road and not on the sidewalk. Always walk bikes across the road and while on sidewalks. Most importantly, signal before turning or stopping so vehicles and pedestrians know what you are planning to do before you do it. Mr. Perron and Mr. Hawken discovered an amazing nonprofit organization, ProHAB Helmet Society website states, "Our aim is to get as many helmets on as many heads as we can while developing awareness about the use of helmets within our bike community." They have agreed to let us size and request helmets for any students at our school who need one for only a donation from parents! The helmets they are providing are nutcase helmets, that retail at $90. and will provide exceptional protection for the brains of our kids! The cost to the organization to provide these helmets is $45, so if you can afford to donate that much the helmet your child receives can be replaced and offered to another child. If that is too much, please ask for a helmet anyway and donate what you can. A request form came home with the important letter I sent on Friday to every child. Please return the request along with your donation (cash only, no coin) to the school this week. Mr. Perron will be measuring students so that the correct size of helmet is requested for each child. HUGE THANKS TO PROHAB FOR MAKING SURE THAT ALL OF OUR KIDS CAN BE SAFE AS THEY RIDE!
On June 7 our school will participate in Calgary Bike to School Day. We will participate, rain or shine, and we will store all bikes, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades in the locked gym during the day, all ready for the ride home, since we expect that many more students will bring "wheels" than will fit in the bike racks! Students are reminded at all times, but particularly on June 7, that when arriving at school bikes must be walked. Please remember that every rider MUST have a helmet! It is a rule of participation - and the Alberta law. CRAZY HAT Day!Student advisory have reported being very bothered this year by the amount of garbage that is on the grounds and not being placed in cans. They challenged all students and staff to pick up three items per day for a month to earn a "fun day". They met twice over two months to review the results and were disappointed that many students were not getting the message. They proposed a whole school clean up, which happened on April 18. Since then the student advisors commented that we all seemed to be taking better care of our place, so it was decided to have a Crazy Hat Day to celebrate. Students were challenged to use recycled materials in their hats if they could. Here are some of the results! May 16 - 20 is Math Week! This week our school is spending some special time and attention on Math instruction. Many parents have asked how to support their child's numeracy learning at home. This week we will be teaching all of our students math games and activities that you will be able to practice at home. Check daily tweets from your child's teacher so you can practice these games at home. Every day will include new games and activities! Ask your child about it! News from the Office
