Follow Your Passion FridayToday was also Follow Your Passion Friday. Throughout the school students were involved in their fifth opportunity to learn about a topic they are curious about. Students became interior designers, seamstresses, computer coders, News from KindergartenKindergarten is a busy place this time of year. We are becoming more and more independent each day as we zip, buckle and button our own snow pants, boots, hats and mittens. Many of our classroom activities and conversations have been focused around Winter and snow. Many students wondered about the animals outside. Students were concerned that the animals were cold in the snow, and wondered how they stay warm. This lead us to begin exploring books about animals in the winter. We have been looking at non-fiction books where we came across images of the Rocky Mountains. Many students shared their experiences they have had with their families in the mountains, and we noticed that we can see the mountains from some parts of our city. Students worked together to turn our dramatic play centre into a forest and the Rocky Mountains. Students were sure to build caves for the bears to hibernate in, burrows for the rabbits and dens for foxes. We also started an Author study, learning about Jan Brett and reading different books written and illustrated by her. We noticed that she has a lot of winter books with animals in them. This inspired us to begin telling our own stories. Children created pictures out of clay, twigs, gems and small animals to tell their own animal stories. We are in the process of adding these stories to Iris. Please check your child’s story out on Iris! Coming up, we will from small groups and become animal experts. Students will use books and videos to learn about forest animals and animals in our community. We will share this exciting learning with each other, taking on an expert role to share our research with the class. News from Grade Three/FourStudio Bell Tour The grade 3/4 classes had the opportunity to visit Studio Bell right before the winter break. Students had a full day of exploring the new music center. They participated in a musical scavenger hunt, created a sound sandwich, played a variety of instruments, learned about the history of the Kimball theatre organ and the science behind sound. Students had an opportunity to connect their own learning from our classroom with artists and instruments in the musical world. Word Work Our classes have been working on enhancing our writing through daily word work activities where students learn to understand plurals, verb tenses, blends and word endings. We are working on building vocabulary and adding detail and description to our sentences. Math ChallengeLast week's Math Challenge was a tough one!
