School UpdatesThank you for reading the blog to get updates on what is happening at school. This week there is lots of information to share with you! Beginning next week we will be sharing news from one of our four grade teams each week. Please watch for news from our Grade 3/4 team next week! STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES Registration for Student-led conferences will open on Monday, September 12. As parents were advised at the beginning of the year, the registration will be accessed through your MY CBE ACCOUNT. If you have not yet set up your account, please come by the office so we can help you get set up. Conferences will take place Thursday, September 22 and Friday, September 23. We look forward to seeing all of our parents for these important conferences. GRADE ONE/TWO STUDENTS TO PERFORM O CANADA We are very proud of our grade one/two students who have been practicing our national anthem every day with their classroom teachers and Mrs. Villman, our music teacher. On Tuesday all of these students will be traveling by bus to the CBE Education Centre to perform the national anthem at the opening of the CBE Board meeting. They will be singing on Tuesday, September 13, at 12:00 and there will be a live stream of the meeting available on the Calgary Board of Education website -http://www.cbe.ab.ca/about-us/board-of-trustees/Pages/Board-Meetings.aspx. STAFFING UPDATE High enrolment in grade 5/6 has resulted in class sizes of 35 each. We have been able to hire a third teacher to add to that team, reducing class sizes significantly. Beginning Monday, we will be welcoming back Mrs. Avieneet Dhillon to our staff. Learning Commons UpdatesLEARNING COMMONS OPENS This week our Learning Commons opened to students. Just like last year, there will be no set "library" days for students and they are invited to return their books whenever they are finished with them. Students can take new books out each day during "book exchange" times when there will be an adult there to help them. EDUCATION MATTERS LEARNING COMMONS GRANT We were very fortunate to receive a grant from Education Matters that will allow us to add a great deal to our Learning Commons this year. In order to qualify for this $33,000. grant, we received $2,000. from our DHS School Council, bringing the total available to $35,000. We are currently planning how we will use this very generous grant! Stay tuned. ADOPT A SCHOOL Once again this year we will be participating in Indigo's Adopt-a-School Campaign. Through this program, the public can make donations to the school that allow us to purchase books to add to our collection. Last year we were able to add lots of of new titles to our non-fiction collection, which were very lacking. This year we hope to add even more to our collection through these donations. In addition to receiving the donations, Indigo/Chapters discount the books we purchase by 30%! This campaign takes place between September 18 and October 6. You can follow our progress on this campaign on our school's page - please let all of your friends know that anyone can donate - https://adoptaschool.indigo.ca/eng/schools/1480.
