I am often asked what parents can do to help their children with their school work. I am certain that I must sound like a broken record when I repeatedly answer, "Read!" - read to them, read with them, have them read to you, talk about what they have read, let them see you read, talk about what you are reading - show them that this lifelong skill is important to you. Research shoes that one of the key indicators of future academic success is the ability of students to read and comprehend text. In 2012 through 2014, we focused heavily as a school on reading and reading comprehension. In our Tell them From Me survey, completed by our students, grade 4 - 6 students were asked, "What is the most important thing about reading? "
Did you know that Calgary Reads shares that an independent reading survey by Anderson, Wilson & Fielding concluded that children who spend 15 minutes per day reading are exposed to ONE MILLION written words per year? Students who read have a significant advantage over those who don't and it's up to both school and home to make this happen. Every student enrolled with CBE last year received a library card. This card is like a magic key that can open the world to your child. It allows them to access books through print, audio, and even borrow music and movies - all for FREE. If you haven't done so, please take your child to the library and encourage them to become lifelong readers. The time you spend reading with them will give them a better future and also give you and your child a shared fun activity that you can do anywhere, anytime. Check it out in person at Village Square Library or online at http://calgarylibrary.ca. Good readers use the same strategies whether they are new or seasoned readers. Helping your children to use these strategies will increase both their reading abilities and the enjoyment they find in reading. Reading Strategies
