We have mentioned before that we are partners with you in your child's education. We need to work together to help your children achieve the best that they can. This means that we need to have lots of communication between school and home. Please read this blog weekly and follow the tweets from your children's teachers and from the school, and call the school if you have questions. We try to respond to telephone calls within 24 hours, Email is another great way to reach our staff - our email addresses are all posted on the front page of the school site. If you see a teacher outside, even if it isn't your child's teacher, please stop and say hello. This week's blog is about other ways that you can help support your child and our school. School CouncilWe have a small but very committed group of parents who volunteer their time to attend monthly School Council meetings. These meetings are a very important way that the school shares information and support for decision making with our parents. Attending these meetings is the best way to make sure that your voice is heard. On September 8 the School Council will elect the executive for the year. These positions are key to helping this invaluable group operate, and we would love for you to be part of it. Even if you do not feel ready to make this level of commitment, you are needed at the monthly meetings, and to help by volunteering at School Council events. School administration will be sharing the philosophy behind multi-age classrooms at this meeting, along with some important updates. Mrs. Emilsson, our Kindergarten Teacher, and Ms. Cavanaugh, from our Grade One/Two team will be sharing how their start up has gone and answering questions, if you have any. Babysitting is always available for these meetings. Printing and HandwritingThis year we are developing a school-wide approach to teaching printing and handwriting. All classes will be devoting some time to improving student skills in this area. While we are very aware of the need for students to learn to use computers to communicate with the world, we also know that there is a need for all forms of written communication. Students will be practicing their penmanship daily and this is an area that you can help with at home. Please ask your child to share what they are learning with you and encourage them to practice this at home by writing letters to family, writing grocery lists or even writing notes between members of your household. If you would like more information, please ask your child's teacher. Mathematics and Math GamesLast year the school sent home a deck of cards and a set of dice for each student. Every class is learning math games that will help them practice skills learned in their class. Several games are included in this blog - click Mathematics on the side bar to see some games you can play in your home. Helping your child with their basic facts at home is always encouraged! Depending on the age and comfort level of your child, this may be number recognition, counting, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, or place value. If you need suggestions, please ask your child's teacher. ReadingIt is our school's expectation that every student will read every night. This may mean that they are reading with parents, siblings, grandparents, It could also mean that they are sharing a great story with a family pet or stuffed toy. Our Learning Commons will open this week, but if you need books, please visit the Calgary Public Library at Village Square. Each student can borrow up to 99 books at a time! NO one should be without a good book. VolunteerOur school community needs YOU. We are very short of volunteers who will come in and read with students and help out in classrooms. We also always need volunteers for field trips and special events. Please consider donating some of your time to our school, and if you have friends in the community who aren't parents here, they are very welcome, too. Call the office for more information. Breakfast ClubAre you an early riser who would like to help out with our Breakfast program? We would love to have a few extra hands in the mornings to help out. Please call the office for more information. Meanwhile, on Twitter- this was happening this week!Weekly EventsPE FOCUS - Soccer
