There are places in the world that we will never visit. There are places beyond the world that we will never visit. There are places that don't exist that we will never visit. But if you are a reader, there is no place that you can't visit in your mind. Many of our students are fortunate enough to have come from, or have visited, places that I will never get to in my lifetime. Through their stories and writing, and the books that are available to me, I can at least let my mind imagine those worlds. In my very first blog post I quoted David Bouchard, "Maria Montessori taught us that it takes three things to learn to read: time, a hero and books — not just any books but books that include their readers and books that are accessible to them." As a parent, grandparent and educator I have been fortunate enough to observe many children finding that one book that turns them into a reader. While children may learn to decode, or even summarize a text, it is the passion for one great book that turns you into a reader. Often those who aren't readers YET, simply haven't experienced the one book that speaks to them and opens their mind to new adventures beyond. What an honour it is to be the hero that helps a child discover this new world! As parents this is a remarkable opportunity that you can share with your child. Remember that your child has a free library card through Calgary Public Library. Spend some time at the library together and see if you can help your child find their one book. Ms. Sweet's favorite author is one that I have read with delight to many years of students. I have watched them hold their breath as the hero challenges himself to do something daring, and seen their faces light up as he succeeds. If you are a child or a child at heart, J.K. Rowling's books will captivate you. In this Youtube video she reads chapter one of the first book in the Harry Potter series - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. She also answers questions from the audience that may be some of the same ones you or your children have. As always, click on the image to view the video, and then I am sure you will want to take a trip to the library so you can hear the rest! Updates from the Office
